Today marks the beginning of National Student Volunteer Week 2020 (#NSVW20), which runs from 10 - 16 August, providing an opportunity to acknowledge the impact that student volunteers make through volunteering.

To mark the week in Perth, UWA together with Curtin, Notre Dame, ECU and Murdoch universities will join forces to undertake a beach clean-up at Leighton Beach in Fremantle on Saturday 15 August.

Under the expert guidance of Perth NRM, the inter-university team of 50 student volunteers will remove common pervasive weeds from the dunes, clear up litter and marine debris and plant local species, creating a once again pristine environment in this beautiful coastal area.

Education providers, volunteer organisations and students all over Australia will be celebrating #NSVW20 through a variety of events, activities and campaigns that celebrate student volunteers and connect young people with opportunities to get involved in volunteering. Western Australia is the only state in Australia to hold an inter-university event.

Collective Impact: Give.Grow.Connect” is the theme of #NSVW20 to represent the thousands of students who give, grow, and connect through volunteering. This contribution has a major impact on communities and causes, on both the national and international stage.

Volunteering WA CEO Tina Williams said, “Volunteering provides a unique opportunity for students to make a difference in causes they are passionate about, as well as developing their skills which can often lead to a pathway to employment. It’s also a wonderful way for students to meet one another and feel connected within their community.”

Ms Williams added that she was very pleased to see how much emphasis and importance Western Australian tertiary institutions place on volunteering and on celebrating National Student Volunteer Week.
