The Homeless Connect Perth project provides a “one stop shop” of essential and ongoing services to homeless people or those at risk of homelessness. This annual initiative sponsored by the City of Perth and hosted by Volunteering WA connects Government, community, the business sector and volunteers to provide valuable support services to those of us experiencing homelessness.
The aim of Homeless Connect is to:
- Provide immediate provision of services on the day including accommodation assistance; counselling; legal advice; employment services; free GP, dental, podiatry and optometry services; budget/financial counselling; identification (Births/Deaths/Marriages); massage & skin treatments; free shop facility with food, clothing, and toiletries; personal hygiene (haircuts and showers); meal service; sporting and arts activities.
- Provide awareness of long term opportunities for guests
- Create a day of social connection and happiness
Since 2008 Volunteering WA has hosted ten Homeless Connect events. In 2017, over 2000 people attended the event held at the Russell Square in Northbridge and were assisted by over 400 volunteers. For some of them, the day was life changing.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Census of Population and Housing, in 2016 there are 9,500 West Australians experiencing homelessness. This issue cannot be solved in one day, but becoming reconnected to the community can be achieved through Homeless Connect Perth.
