This report highlights the motivations, habits, and preferences of Australians involved in volunteering, charity, and social activities. The sample was nationally representative and weighted to account for demographics (e.g., age).

Data were obtained from 1,023 interviewees by way of an online survey which took place between 2 to 31 August 2018.

Some pertinent results are:

  • Two-thirds of the participants gave money over the past 12 months (68%).
  • Supporting children was the most popular cause for Australians to have donated to (30%).
  • The typical (median) amount donated or sponsored in the four weeks preceding the survey was $80.
  • Those aged 25-34 were most likely to have made a donation in the last 12 months (74%).
  • A third (35%) had volunteered in the past 12 months and, as with donating money, supporting children was the most popular cause (21%).
  • Younger Australians (18-24 years) were more likely to volunteer than their older counterparts.
  • Most participants felt that charities have a positive impact. Women in particular reported that they felt they had a positive impact on their local communities and on Australia as a whole.

The authors argued that giving is the key to positive change and the need for connection and purpose was a key theme throughout the research. Caring about the cause was the most common reason given by donors as to why they give, reinforcing the need to connect to causes that matter.
