National Compact

The Australian Government, as part of its social inclusion agenda, wants to develop a new and stronger relationship with the Third Sector in Australia. The Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, the Hon Jenny Macklin MP, and the Parliamentary Secretary for Social Inclusion and the Voluntary Sector, Senator the Hon Ursula Stephens are leading the government’s work on generating an active, robust and creative engagement with Third Sector organisations. One identified way to do this is through a National Compact - an agreement between the Australian Government and the Third Sector which will describe how we will work together to improve and strengthen our relationship to support the provision of policy advice and the delivery of services to the community.

Discussions centre on the National Compact Consultation Paper, which outlines why the government and the sector think that a National Compact is important. It describes the principles we believe should underpin the compact and outlines some of the areas for action that we think we should be focusing on. A copy of this is available at http://www.socialinclusion.gov.au/Compact/Pages/default.aspx. Hard copies and copies in accessible formats can be obtained by emailing australiancompact@fahcsia.gov.au or calling 1800 607 839 Mon - Fri from 8.30am - 5.00pm (AEST). TTY users may T: 133 677 then ask for the phone number they wish to contact.
