Visiting Volunteers Program

Make your next holiday an unforgettable experience!

The Visiting Volunteers program is assisting many regional West Australian communities by providing voluntary support to complete many projects and programs within those communities. The program encourages travellers to add something special to their trip by lending their own unique skills and services to the communities they visit. Meeting local people and becoming a real part of the community results in an unforgettable travel experience.

The range of volunteering opportunities available is varied and unique. Travellers can volunteer as a tour guide in Shark Bay, help with the restoration of the historic jetty and equipment in the Carnarvon Heritage Precinct; or help children in a remote school with class room support and after school care programs. Ravensthorpe Museum needs assistance in cataloguing and restoration of machinery and equipment.

The visiting volunteer chooses where they would like to visit, how long they will spend there and the volunteering activity they will participate in.

Background

The Visiting Volunteers program was first launched in 2006 and in 2007 the program grew and took on a slightly different perspective with many of the baby boomers and short term visitors taking part in the program. Support of Local Government and Regional Development Commissions is the key element in the advancement of the Visiting Volunteers program.  Funding from the State Government through the Department of Local Government and Regional Development has resulted in more volunteer opportunities being offered during 2007/08.

Recruitment of volunteers and the listing of volunteer projects will continue throughout the year. Volunteering WA can provide the professional support and expertise to assist local government, community groups and visiting volunteers.
