Featured volunteers
Each month we will profile one of our volunteers, they are all such an interesting bunch.
Horst - a multitasker!
Horst is a long term volunteer who began volunteering in the early 80's with an organisation called Citizen Radio Emergency Service Teams which provided assistance for radio calls from fire, police, ambulance, RAC and any other service requiring help. In 1983 Horst became a Commissioner for Declarations, a role he held for 22 years. After retiring Horst volunteered with AMES before joining Volunteering WA in March 2003 where he says he enjoys the "company and camaraderie". We asked Horst to tell us a little about the work he does at VWA.
"When I started at VWA on the 14/03/03 I assisted Garry with his Retired and Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP). Because it did not require a lot of time and I had more to give I ask to be trained as a Referral Officer. We had plenty of clients and 3-4 days was normal. During 2003 negotiations with the City of Joondalup resulted in the opening of the Joondalup VRC situated inside the Library and we held our first session on the 04/12/03".
Horst is still a referral officer at the Joondalup VRC but also promotes VWA at his local Centrelink office, and at other promotional events such as shopping centres, leisure centres and local festivals. Horst has also been very involved in testing a new volunteering database which is being developed at VWA and reporting back his findings.
Gary - our superstar Referral Officer!
If you make a Tuesday afternoon appointment you may be lucky to talk with him. Gary was born in London and joined a pop group in the 1960s as a guitarist and bass player. Over the next forty years or so, he worked along side such musical luminaries as Peter Frampton, Gerry Rafferty, Demis Rousos, Bonnie Tyler and many others. He also worked as a broadcaster for BBC radio presenting a variety of programmes, his favourite of which was Listen with Mother.
Emigrating from the UK to Perth in 1989, he ran a successful jingle company throughout the 90s and was the speaking voice on hundreds of radio and television commercials. These days, apart from giving guitar lessons (very reasonable fees!) and writing and playing music in the Gypsy Jazz style with ex Shadow Hank Marvin, he is a disruptive influence at the Volunteer Resource Centre in West Perth where he has worked as a Referral Officer for the last two and a half years.
As luck would have it we have managed to find a clip of Gary in action...
